Chocolate Lab Painting In Progress

I’ve been working on Bear, the dog in the painting by getting the darks and lights in place. His coat color is very uniform so the trick is to suggest the shape of his body without altering the color of his fur. Although his overall coat color is basically a combination of raw and burnt umbers–I’ve used some subtle tones of blue and pink to gently highlight a soft sheen on his fur.

Bear seems like he’s quite a regal dog–His expression is quite serious and solemn for a lab, at least in the reference photo I’m working from.
