Finished Painting of a Bichon Frise

Toby the Bichon Frise by Hope Lane, 9″ x 12″ acrylic

In painting Toby, my challenge was to capture the two distinct textures of his white fur–the soft curly lamb-like quality of his body coat and the top of his head–and the longer curly hair on his face. I used several brushes including an old beat up hog bristle I find useful for fleecy fur.

There’s a lot more color than you’d think in painting white fur. I used lavender, turquoise and a smidge of pink as well as burnt umber and plenty of white.

His human said that he was smart and he had a lot going on behind his eyes. So I spent a lot of time trying to get his expression just right. Hopefully you can see this in the final portrait.
