Grover at the Beach

There’s nothing better than when a client I painted a portrait for comes back again for another painting. I originally painted a sweet-faced yellow lab named Ozzie almost three years ago and now my client has decided to give a portrait of Grover as a gift to a good friend.

Grover has that wonderful teddy bear fur that cockapoos can have. My photo reference of him is a little soft and because if those two things, I plan to paint him in a slightly more impressionist style than I typically use. And the fact that my reference photos show him at the beach when the sun is low and the light is very warm, will make that approach work well for this painting.

This is my starting sketch.
